The first week of December was Environmental awareness week at Jacobs University Bremen. One of the contests taking place during the week was Re:art. The idea was to recycle, reuse, rethink, and create an art piece using rubbish/trash/garbage. One of the reason I decided to participate in the contest was my exam. I really did not want to study for it, so I started thinking and working on it. The second, and the main reason for wanting to participate in the contest was my disagreement with the way the contest was presented. It was presented as an art contest where you try to make trash look pretty. However, I wanted to take it beyond the obvious and create something which not only looks acceptable, but more importantly, offers a function. It is only then that we are really “reusing” something, and in the process, we are also reducing waste. 🙂
Anyhow, here are some pictures of the final product and the design:

I ended up getting 3rd place in the contest, and more importantly, made the trash in my room useful. I was particularly impressed by how I managed to use a trash bag to tie the bottles together.. 🙂
